In this day and age, it's impossible to discipline your kids. Not impossible but, parents are so afraid to upset them due to all the laws on discipline, and the threat that their kid could call the police or tell someone that they are being abused or whatever.
My kids are now all adults and they are polite. Far from perfect and I have had my share of headaches. from smoking pot, drinking, car accidents (one with drinking). etc. BUT......my kids are NEVER rude. They know the line of respect with other people. they admit to their mistakes and pay for them. I never beat my kids, 4 kids and I think there may have been a total of 6 spankings on the butt, and those were incidents that could have killed them, like running out in front of a car or ok the time when one of my kids threatened to call cps cuz i wouldn't let her go to some party age 13 and she got brave and called me a bitch. and that was up side the head, once. It never happened again. My point is they all do stuff, yours mine, but are held accountable for their actions.
Most of my conversations included the consequences of not following the rules. AND never being rude to other adults. My kids were also raised to have opinions. They didn't have to agree with me, and were allowed to tell me why but were also taught to respect me and my rules.
My kids are hard working, fun adults who treat other people with respect. they say please and thank you, open doors for people and I made a ton of mistakes.
These kids come into the ed and they are just assholes and the parents let them. I hear them call their parents names, tell them to shut up etc. and these are kids from approx 8 and up. the younger ones are allowed to do anything they want.
I understand you kid is hurt or sick, but never should behave that way.
some big things, like the 16 y/o that took daddy's restored 1967 mustang out for a joy ride and hit a tree. No remorse, 'Oh well he'll get over it'
The worst are the drunk kids who come in spitting and cussing until mom shows up then start crying and saying someone did this to them, and the parents fucking believe it. I tell these parents they should take pics of the tubes, catheters etc. cuz when they wake up there is no memory and they brag to their friends how easy that was.
My oldest daughter was carried home one night puking on her new shoes that she had saved for. i covered her bed in plastic and she layed in it all night. she peed the bed, puked and ruined her shoes. oh well, it was the only time this happened.
one time this mom and her 4 y/o were waiting for a doctor and i asked her to put a gown on the kid. she looked at the kid and the kid said no. the mom turned to me and said ''he doesn't want to change his clothes'' i told her that she came to us for treatment and the doctors want everyone in a gown. she says it's ok he doesn't want to....wtf----I asked her who was the parent and if she had a problem taking the clothes off she could step out and i would be happy to remove them. NO. I told her to buck up and be the aprent and the doctor would see them as soon as the kid is in a gown and not before. 2 hours later she talked the kid out of the clothes at the cost of a trip to toys r us and mcdonalds and some special park.
she is gonna have some serious problems later. it just astounds me.
Parents need to man up and take care of things, you don't have to beat your kids, but make them responsible for their actions. teach them things like please and thank you etc.

Amen! I don't have kids myself but I could NEVER imagine being outright rude and beligerant towards my own parents. We used to get select spankings (nothing abuse worthy) if we got particularly out of hand and for the most part that kept us in line. We were taught to question but still respect authority. I see teens today and they are the rudest assholes ever.
ReplyDeleteThere was one glimmer of hope though in one of my recent shifts. There was a 16 year old who was acting like an entitled asshole, not picking up after himself, cussing out the staff, etc. His mother showed up, smacked him upside the head, told him to pick up his shit, took away his car keys and told him to get his ass to his soccer practice himself because if he was old enough to start shit, he was old enough to take care of the consequences.
Anyways, sorry for the long rant but seeing entitled kids with their shoulder shrugging parents really irritates me!
